Certified
Products
We are pleased to announce that beginning with our
version 6.0 release in February of 2000, we have increased the power
and versatility of The Accounting Library
dramatically by launching a new program called Product Certification. The
mechanics of the Product Certification program are quite simple:
-
All of the leading mid-market accounting software
vendors were asked to participate in this voluntary program.
-
Ten vendors representing 22
products have been certified to date.
-
Additional products will be added each year.
-
Charles Chewning, publisher of The
Accounting Library has met with each participating
vendor and reviewed their product in detail for two days.
-
Every single response in the database was verified
against specific functionality within the software itself.
-
Mr. Chewning was the final arbiter with respect
to each response, not the vendor.
-
Once all product responses were verified, Mr.
Chewning reviewed them one final time to make sure that there
was complete consitency across all products.
-
Products will be recertified every year.
-
A special symbol will be attached to each certified
product in the database so that users can distinguish certified
products from all other products easily.
-
User will be able to access additional vendor
and product information for each certified product from within
the analysis program. While this information is not as comprehensive
as that which is available directly from the vendor, it will
enable users to learn more about each vendor and certified product
without having to wade through pages and pages of marketing
literature.
Advantages
for Users
The real keys to the Product Certification program
are increased accuracy and consistency and that translated into
a much higher level of comfort for our subscribers.
-
If a vendor says "Yes" they provide
this functionality or report, subscribers can rely upon the
fact that this is correct.
-
If the vendor's core product cannot meet a particular
requirement out-of-the-box, but can through a report writer,
the addition of a field, the use of a third party application,
the modification or customization of the product, or by a scheduled
future release in less than 12 months, each of these resposes
have been verified as well.
-
Finally, Mr. Chewning established strict guidelines
with respect to which of these additional responses were acceptable.
This final step ensures that the responses of each vendor are
consistent across the board.
-
This final step is important because in theory
all products can be modified using source code or some form
of applications development environment. However, the fact that
a product can be modified does not necessarily mean that the
modification would be cost effective for an individual user
organization. If the perceived cost of a modification would
have been too costly, Mr. Chewning forced a response of "No"
rather than "Modification".
